This week’s Hints and Tips tutorial is a step by step guide to make a gorgeous Watermelon suite consisting of a necklace, earrings and a key ring bag charm! Artist Andy Warhol has provided designers with huge inspiration towards the creation of fruit jewellery after he created a signature banana necklace. Step One

Condition each colour of clay by warming and kneading with your hands until it no longer cracks. Wash your hands after each colour. Create a red ball approx 3cm diameter, a green ball approx 2cm diameter, a black ball approx 2cm diameter and a white ball approx 2cm diameter.

Step Two

Roll the black clay into a tube around 3mm wide, flatten your red clay and roll and wrap around the black.

Step Three

Cut into 3cm lengths and stack together to form a semi-circular tube.

Step Four

Flatten your white clay and cover the domed side of your cane. Repeat with the green clay.

Step Five

Pull and shape your clay by drawing the clay out from the middle outwards. This will create a smaller, longer ‘cane’ of clay.

Step Six

Check your design by slicing the rough end of the cane of clay. This should give you an indication of your design.

Step Seven

When you’re happy with the shape, create slices approximately 2mm thick.

Step Eight

Screw a headpin in each charm and bake in the oven at 275F (130C) for a maximum of 30 minutes.

Step Nine

Open the ring on a shepherd’s hook and add your watermelon charm to make an earring, then repeat to make a matching pair!

Step Ten

Using two pairs of flat nose pliers open a jump ring north to south like you are opening a door and add your watermelon charm. Cut 17.5 inches of chain and add your watermelon charm with the jump ring to the center point of the chain.

Step Eleven

To complete your necklace, add a clasp with a jump ring to each end of the chain.

Step Twelve

Cut 3 different lengths of chain, suing a jump ring, add a charm to each end and using another jump ring add the 3 lengths of chain and your bag charm
