Getting Started with Seed Beading: What Threading Materials Should I use?
Seed Beading may seem complex, but that's where we're here to help! There's a few different threading materials you can use when Seed Beading, the ones you use can depend on bead type and size and the flexibility you need in your make.
Here's a small rundown on the threading materials we recommend for Seed Beading!
Wildfire
Wildfire made by Beadalon is thermally bonded thread said to be pierce resistant, has minimal stretch and won't fray. It comes in a variety of colours including, black, white, blue, red, grey and green and will fit an English Beading Needle size 10 or 12 if you flatten the end with your fingernails first.
FireLine
Initially manufactured by Berkley as fishing line, has been bought and rebranded by The Beadsmith for use with jewellery. It is a synthetic pre-waxed braided bead cord consisting of gel-spun polyethylene. It is stretch and fray resistant, is thinner than WildFire thread but only comes in Crystal, Black, Smoke and Satin Black. It will fit an English beading needle size 10 or 12.
K.O. Thread
Made by Miyuki in Japan and 100% Nylon, K.O. is a pre-waxed, colourfast, abrasion and tangle resistant thread, which can be knotted tightly and securely. It will fit an English Beading Needle Size 12.
Nylon Thread
Nylon beading thread comes in all colours of the rainbow and is sold under a number of brand names such as Nymo, C-Lon, Superlon or S-Lon. It is twisted and lightly waxed making it great for beading and loom work. You may choose to condition nylon beading thread further (using Beeswax) to smooth the thread fibres, preventing fraying and helping it glide through the beads more easily. S-Lon Size D will fit an English Beading Needle size 12 easily.
