Meet Guest Designer Abi Floyd

Can you tell us a little bit about you and your history in jewellery making?

I've always been an arty type and have been told I’m creative. I've dabbled in nearly every craft and art. I was very into baking for quite a few years, in particular sugar craft so modelling with clay fitted. Luckily clay doesn't get eaten either, so people enjoy it for longer!

What first piqued your interest in jewellery making?

I work full time, but I always crave letting out my creativity. Melrose Makes was born from my need to create. I knew I wanted to do something which involved modelling so I tried clay and loved the results. After a few months of perfecting, I took the leap to set up a business. Seeing people happy to receive something I have made keeps me creating.

How long have you been in the jewellery industry?

Coming up two years now. I am self-taught so have been perfecting ever since I first began working with clay. I am always learning and looking for new things.

What is the meaning behind your brand name, Melrose Makes?

Melrose Makes creates jewellery inspired by nature which is designed to give you the confidence to express yourself and bloom, just like a flower

What is your main point of interest in the jewellery industry now?

Texture! This is quite prominent in the clay sector right now. Using items event things from around the house to create texture and interest in your components. You may see some of these techniques in my first show.

What is your favourite piece of jewellery in your personal collection?

My Sculpted Rose dangles. They are quite a timeless piece and I loved making them. I even made a custom pair for a bride.

What is your favourite piece of jewellery you’ve ever made?

Viola vases. Using abalone shell pieces was new for me and I loved how they turned out

What have you got planned for your upcoming shows on JewelleryMaker?

I intend to show simple techniques which will kick start and inspire your own creativity. Clay is very versatile so I’m hoping to give you a few Ideas which you can adapt to your own taste.

What are you most excited about to be working with JM?

Talking to you! My current work is very solitary so I’m looking forward to interactive with other makers and meeting people.

What are your three favourite tools to use with Polymer Clay?

Rotary tool – I began by hand sanding, and this save so much time

Sculpting tools – I love fine details, so these are vital

Cutters – a polymer clay artists can never have enough cutters!

We have a lot of animal themed makes on JewelleryMaker – If you were an animal, which would you be and why?

A Labrador – I’m friendly and approachable and love being around people. I can be a little excitable too.
