Find out more about this product

This special blackwork project was designed by Jane Greenoff for The Cross Stitch Guild, who was inspired by houses in the city of Warsaw, Poland. It is only available on Linen fabric due to the complexity of the pattern.
In Europe, during the Elizabethan period, blackwork embroidery was used to decorate clothing to imitate the appearance of lace. The stitch used for blackwork embroidery is often known as Holbein or double running stitch, although the technique was used as far back as Chaucer’s time. The reason for this stitch selection is that the work will look almost identical from the back or front, essential for costume. The painter, Hans Holbein painted Jane Seymour in 1537, which clearly shows a blackwork cuff thus leading to the additional name for double running stitch or Holbein stitch.

Cashel 28-count pure linen evenweave, stranded cottons (floss) coloured chart, needle and instructions.

Design Size: 30.5 x 14cm (12 x 5.5ins)
