How to create a spiral caged gemstone

create a flower with top drilled pear drops

Step One

Cut a length of wire approx 30cm long and using Round Nose Pliers make a very small loop at one end. (note the length you need will be determined by the size of the gemstone you are wrapping).

Step Two

Using Flat Nose Pliers clamp hold of the loop and begin to turn it so that you create a spiral

Step Three

Keep spiralling until the wire is wide enough to encase the gemstone. You can measure this by offering it up to the stone and stretching the spiral up around it.

Step Four

When you are about half way down the wire start another spiral from the other end turning it in the opposite direction to the first one. Keep going until the spirals meet in the middle.

Step Five

Bend the spirals up towards each other, and stretch them out to create a cage.

Step Six

Insert the gemstone and adjust the cage for the best fit.

Step Seven

Prise up the smaller coils of the spiral now sitting on top of the gemstone, and thread a Jumpring through the centre to use as a bail for your pendant.
