A Guide to Jewellery Findings for Earrings

What are findings? And why are they so important to jewellery making?

Findings are essentially the ‘nuts and bolts’ of making jewellery, they are small metal components that connect the various sections of jewellery together. You will always need a good selection of these and will need to top up your ‘stash’ so that you don’t run out of anything important!

We have a huge selection of findings specifically for making earrings, which you can shop here:

Here’s a guide to get you in the know on what basic finding does what when making Earrings!

Shepherds Hooks

(Also called Fishhooks, French Hooks or Ear wires)  A Shephards Hook is a pre-formed wire earring finding in the shape of a Shepherds Hook/Crook.

How to use: These are used to create earrings by attaching them to your wrapped loop drops. The Hook part of the earring then goes through the ear piercing.

Post & Butterfly Back

Posts and Butterfly Backs are most commonly used for Stud Earrings, although some do come with small loops to attach a drop from.

How to use: You use these by pushing the post through the ear piercing and attaching the separate butterfly back to the other side, securing it in place behind the ear.

Hoop Earrings

Hoop Earrings are a circular hoop of metal to be worn either on their own or embellished.

How to use: Pre-formed Hoops can be adorned by opening them and feeding on beads, charms, chain or anything with a wide enough hole to go over the wire. You can also wire wrap or sew seed beads around them.
